LWL Season 3: Episode 3 “Lights! Camera! Lie!”

SCENE ONE – EXT. SAPPHIRE ENTERTAINMENT – STAGE A – MORNING

LOLA, LIV, SKYLAR, BRIANNA, SAM, and JAXON are all walking together.

BRIANNA: First day of filming guys. How are we feeling?

LOLA: Okay, I guess.

SAM: Same. As long as I don’t look stupid on camera.

SKYLAR: Too late for that.

SAM: Sky, I think you’ve been spending way too much time with Aria.

LOLA, LIV, SKYLAR, BRIANNA, SAM, and JAXON’s walking slows to a stop.

SKYLAR: Whatever. Look, the key to successful filming for this project is simple as long as you follow my three rules. Know your role. Once those cameras start rolling, we’re no longer just six Rose Publications employees. We’re reality show stars. Second, don’t be afraid to stand out. That’s what this project is all about. And lastly, never lose sight of who you really are. For a project like this, it’s gonna be very easy to succumb to the pressure of trying to give a good performance. Got it?

JAXON: Got it.

LIV: Yeah. Thanks Sky.

LIV checks the time on her phone.

LIV: Well we should all probably get to our dressing rooms so we can start getting ready.

BRIANNA: Right. So you can go meet your little lover boy.

LIV awkwardly laughs and glances at JAXON who’s all but rolled his eyes.

LIV: Yeah, I don’t think so.

BRIANNA: Oh come on, we’re only filming for six weeks. It doesn’t take that long for someone to fall in love with you, Liv.

LIV: Well thank you, Bri. But I promise you, nothing is ever going to happen between me and Jaylin.

JAYLIN approaches them just in time to catch the end of the conversation.

JAYLIN: Quite a shame.

LOLA, LIV, SKYLAR, BRIANNA, SAM, and JAXON all turn to face him.

JAYLIN: It’s so nice to finally meet all of you. I’m Jaylin.

LIV: Liv.

LIV and JAYLIN quickly shake hands before LIV gestures to her friends.

LIV: And this is—

JAYLIN: Oh, I think I got this.

JAYLIN points to everyone as he says their names.

JAYLIN: Skylar. Brianna. Lola. Sam.

JAYLIN looks uncertain when he gets to Jaxon.

JAYLIN: And…Jason?

JAXON: Jaxon.

JAYLIN: Right. Well I’d better get to my dressing room, but I look forward to working with all of you.

SKYLAR: Likewise.

As JAYLIN walks off, JAXON gives him a dirty look.

BRIANNA: Well he was nice.

JAXON: He was fake.

SKYLAR: Okay, jealous much?

LIV looks uneasy.

JAXON: I’m not. I’m just saying that there’s something off about him. I’m trusting my gut on this one.

LOLA: Well my gut is telling me that Sofia is gonna kill us if we don’t get to our dressing rooms, so—

LIV: Right. We’ll see you guys on set.

SAM: Yeah.

LOLA, SKYLAR, BRIANNA, and SAM head towards their dressing rooms, leaving LIV and JAXON behind.

JAXON can see that LIV is visibly nervous.

JAXON: Nervous?

LIV: Yes and I don’t know why. We’ve done big projects before, but I guess this time is just different.

JAXON: Well I’m not worried because I know you’re gonna be amazing. You always are.

LIV blushes.

LIV: Thanks.

JAXON quickly glances around them before giving LIV a quick peck on the lips.

LIV smiles.

JAXON: Good luck today.

LIV brings one of her hands to the side of Jaxon’s face.

LIV: You too.

SCENE TWO – INT. SAPPHIRE ENTERTAINMENT – STAGE A – DRESSING ROOM HALLWAY

LOLA stands outside of her dressing room in awe. She smiles when she sees her name on the door.

SCENE THREE – INT. LOLA’S DRESSING ROOM

LOLA enters the dressing room and closes the door. She sets her stuff down on the couch and takes a look around. She stops at the clothing rack and looks at all of her outfits for the show. She grabs her first outfit and holds it up.

LOLA: Wow.

A knock can be heard on the door.

LOLA turns to face the door.

LOLA: Come in!

The door opens.

SUKI enters carrying the box with the rose bouquet.

SUKI: Good morning, Miss Montgomery. I’m Suki. One of Sapphire’s production assistants.

LOLA: Hi. I’m Lola. It’s nice to meet you.

SUKI: I’ll be around on set a lot so if you ever need anything, me and my team are the best people to ask.

LOLA: Duly noted. Is there anything that I need to know ahead of today’s shoot?

SUKI: Yes.

SUKI glances at her clipboard on top of the box.

SUKI: You are scheduled to be at hair and makeup in about 15 minutes.

LOLA: Okay.

SUKI: Anything else?

LOLA: Yes.

LOLA points to the box.

LOLA: Is that for me?

SUKI: Oh.

SUKI sets her clipboard down and hands LOLA the box.

SUKI: It’s a gift for you.

LOLA: Sweet.

SUKI: Well I will let you get ready and I’ll see you in there.

LOLA: Thanks Suki.

SUKI grabs her clipboard and exits the trailer.

LOLA sits at her vanity and gently places the box in her lap to open it. She discovers that it’s a bouquet of soft pink roses. She smiles as she reads the printed card.

CARD: Good luck on your first day! You’re gonna do great! -MM

SCENE FOUR – INT. SKYLAR’S DRESSING ROOM

SKYLAR is standing in front of her full-length mirror in her first outfit.

SKYLAR: [Voiceover] I’m no stranger to being in front of the camera. Over the years, I’ve learned that even if you expect privacy, you can’t always have it.

SCENE FIVE – INT. STAGE A – HAIR AND MAKEUP

BRIANNA is sitting in one of the chairs finishing up getting her makeup done.

BRIANNA: [Voiceover] Ever since I was little, I’ve gotten used to the idea of being the one to find a subject for a story rather than being one myself. If my time at Rose has taught me anything, it’s that sometimes risking it all to have your voice heard can pay off in ways that you can’t imagine.

Once the MAKEUP ARTIST finishes, BRIANNA turns in her chair and smiles in the mirror.

SCENE SIX – INT. LIV’S DRESSING ROOM

LIV is in the process of putting on her first outfit.

LIV: If you were to ask me about my perspective on love when I first stepped into all of this, my answer would’ve been simple. I love me. And while that’s not necessarily such a bad mindset to be in, I think I’m ready to open my heart to the world.

SCENE SEVEN – INT. SAPPHIRE ENTERTAINMENT – STAGE A – MAIN STAGE

JAXON enters the soundstage.

JAXON: Around here, I’m pretty much known as the hopeless romantic and honestly, I can’t completely disagree. Sometimes fantasy is better than reality.

SCENE EIGHT – INT. SAPPHIRE ENTERTAINMENT – STAGE A – MAIN STAGE

AUSTIN and THE SAPPHIRE CREW MEMBERS are busy getting ready for the shoot.

SAM is sitting in his chair on his phone.

SAM: I’ve gotten used to the idea of being behind the scenes, so this is certainly a step up for me. But no matter what happens, I’ll do whatever it takes to keep the peace.

SCENE NINE – INT. SAPPHIRE ENTERTAINMENT – STAGE A – MAIN STAGE

LOLA enters the soundstage and approaches LIV, SKYLAR, BRIANNA, SAM, JAXON, and JAYLIN who all are waiting by their respective chairs.

LOLA: The way I see it, we have one mission and one mission only: put on a great show. And I will do whatever it takes to get it.

AUSTIN grabs a microphone to address everyone on set.

AUSTIN: Good morning everyone and welcome to our first day of filming!

LOLA, LIV, SKYLAR, BRIANNA, SAM, JAXON, JAYLIN, and THE SAPPHIRE CREW MEMBERS all cheer.

AUSTIN: Now we have a pretty long day of introductory filming to do today, so I’ll keep it brief. I wanted to introduce our director.

LOLA: Aren’t we looking at him?

AUSTIN: Well no. Sofia felt it was best if I worked alongside someone who has some experience with things like this.

LIV: And you’re okay with that?

AUSTIN: Oh absolutely. I’ve met with her and I think we’re gonna make a great team.

SAM: Anyone we know?

AUSTIN: I believe you do. Please welcome Raya King!

JAYLIN and THE SAPPHIRE CREW MEMBERS clap and cheer as RAYA enters the soundstage.

LOLA, LIV, SKYLAR, BRIANNA, SAM, and JAXON all have simultaneous looks of confusion.

LOLA and SAM stand side by side and briefly glare at each other.

LOLA: Did you know about this?

SAM: Nope.

AUSTIN hands the mic to RAYA.

RAYA: Thank you everyone. I’m really excited to be here and look forward to working with all of you. And with that being said, let’s shoot one!

The camera closes in on LOLA displaying a look of disdain.

LOLA: Well this is gonna be fun.

SCENE TEN – OPENING THEME

The opening theme plays.

SCENE ELEVEN – EXT. NEW YORK – B-ROLL

Some B-roll shots of New York are shown, ending with the exterior of Skylar and Brianna’s apartment building.

SCENE TWELVE – INT. SKYLAR AND BRIANNA’S APARTMENT – MORNING

SKYLAR opens the front door.

SKYLAR: Welcome to the Skianna. Name credits go to Bri. I’m really not that creative.

SCENE THIRTEEN – INT. SKYLAR AND BRIANNA’S APARTMENT – B-ROLL

Some B-roll shots of the living area, dining room, and kitchen are shown.

SCENE FOURTEEN – SKYLAR’S CONFESSIONAL 1

AUSTIN: [Off-camera] So I guess every night feels like a slumber party, right?

SKYLAR: To a certain extent, yes. But I will admit that I’m not the easiest person to live with.

AUSTIN: [Off-camera] You’re the roommate from hell?

SKYLAR smiles.

SKYLAR: Well kind of. I constantly feel like I have 50,000 things going through my head on a day to day basis and sometimes my living spaces can reflect that. Somehow Bri can have the same amount of things going on and still manage to have a place for everything and everything in its place. I think it’s a good balance. And over the past few months, we’ve managed to make it work in so many ways.

SCENE FIFTEEN – INT. SKYLAR AND BRIANNA’S APARTMENT – DINING ROOM – MORNING

SKYLAR’s voiceover persists through the scene.

SKYLAR is sitting at the dining room table going over some paperwork.

SKYLAR: I faced a really rough situation with my team regarding my former roommate and best friend, Stella. It’s not a secret as to why things are now rocky between the two of us. I was put in a really difficult place to not only find a new roommate but to do it quickly. And Brianna was an answer to prayer. She was also looking for a new place and it worked out. I truthfully don’t think I would’ve been able to navigate all of that if I didn’t have such amazing friends and family supporting me.

SCENE SIXTEEN – INT. McKAY HOUSE – FOYER – MID-MORNING

SKYLAR walks through the front door.

SKYLAR: Hello!

SIENNA walks out into the foyer.

SIENNA: Hey!

SKYLAR and SIENNA hug.

SKYLAR: How are you?

SIENNA: I’m doing good. You look amazing!

SKYLAR: Thank you. Are you ready to head out?

SIENNA: Yeah, let’s do it.

SIENNA grabs her jacket and purse.

SKYLAR and SIENNA head out the door.

SCENE SEVENTEEN – INT. SKYLAR’S CAR – MID-MORNING

SKYLAR is driving while SIENNA is in the passenger seat.

SIENNA: E called me this morning. Said he was stuck in Italy for an extra two days.

SKYLAR: Really? What a problem to have.

SIENNA: Seriously.

SKYLAR: Why do I feel like he went to Italy just to get out of being on TV?

SIENNA: Honestly, that wouldn’t surprise me.

SCENE EIGHTEEN – SKYLAR’S CONFESSIONAL 2

SKYLAR: My sister has always been comfortable being on camera. My brother, not so much. I definitely influenced that with how many videos I forced him to be a part of when we were younger.

SCENE NINETEEN – EXT. MALL PARKING LOT – MID-MORNING

SKYLAR pulls her car into a parking spot.

SKYLAR: [Voiceover] We’re doing some shopping today because Bri and I have a meeting with Sofia Moorland tomorrow. It’s a little nerve wracking especially when we learned that she’s not meeting with all of us at L&O. We have no idea what to expect, but at least we’ll be dressed for the part.

SCENE TWENTY – INT. MALL – STORE FITTING ROOMS

SKYLAR and SIENNA are in two stalls next to each other.

SIENNA: So you have no idea what this meeting is about?

SKYLAR: No. My first instinct was that she wanted to recast us, but that didn’t make much sense. She did say it was good news so I have some hope. It’s just the anticipation that is killing me.

SIENNA: I get that.

SCENE TWENTY ONE – INT. MALL – FITTING ROOM

SKYLAR snaps some pictures in the mirror in some different outfits.

SKYLAR: [Voiceover] After hitting up some different stores, we were able to snag up some goods.

SCENE TWENTY TWO – EXT. MALL PARKING LOT – AFTERNOON

SKYLAR and SIENNA are walking towards Skylar’s car with their shopping bags.

SIENNA: Can we get something to eat please?

SKYLAR: Let’s do it.

SCENE TWENTY THREE – EXT. NEW YORK – B-ROLL

Some more B-roll shots of New York are shown, ending with the exterior of The Rec Room.

SCENE TWENTY FOUR – INT. THE REC ROOM

Some more B-roll shots of the interior of the rec center, currently being renovated.

SCENE TWENTY FIVE – INT. THE REC ROOM

BRIANNA is walking around the rec center checking on the progress of the renovations.

BRIANNA: Looking good!

SCENE TWENTY SIX – INT. THE REC ROOM – B-ROLL

Some B-roll shots of the spaces being renovated can be seen.

SCENE TWENTY SEVEN – BRIANNA’S CONFESSIONAL 1

AUSTIN: So how long have you been a volunteer here at The Rec Room?

BRIANNA: About two years. I work with the kids in the Creative program.

AUSTIN: Nice. Can you tell us a little bit about the construction going on here?

BRIANNA: Yes, we are in the process of renovating the building to add some more classrooms for the kids as well as a stage for our theater kids. We’re currently in the process of planning our Christmas production, so that’s really exciting.

SCENE TWENTY EIGHT – INT. THE REC ROOM – CLASSROOM

BRIANNA is moving some things into her new classroom.

BRIANNA: [Voiceover] I’m so glad that I finally have a space to call my own. I want to keep the decor in the classroom vibrant to make it a really welcoming space for our kids to come and create. I would’ve loved to have a space like this to come to as a kid, so this really means a lot to me. It doesn’t matter what background you come from. Every kid should be granted the same opportunities to shine.

JADA enters.

JADA: Hello.

BRIANNA turns around.

BRIANNA: Hi. Don’t tell me you’re stepping on my turf now.

JADA: Wow. You almost sounded exactly like me. You’re getting a little too good at that.

BRIANNA: Thanks.

JADA: But seriously, I just wanted to stop by and see if you needed anything.

BRIANNA: I think we’re all set. Do you know when they’re planning on finishing the renovations?

JADA: Not for another month. There were some plumbing and electrical issues that needed to be corrected.

BRIANNA: Got it.

JADA: Oh, before I forget, some of my kids are interested in participating in your Christmas production.

BRIANNA: That’s great. I’d love to have them.

JADA: Awesome.

JADA exits.

SCENE TWENTY NINE – BRIANNA’S CONFESSIONAL 2

BRIANNA: Things have been much better here at the center since Jada and I worked things out with ourselves and the kids. It’s made volunteering here so much more enjoyable.

SCENE THIRTY – EXT. THE REC ROOM

BRIANNA is walking to her car.

BRIANNA: [Voiceover] I am getting ready to head to Sapphire for a meeting with Sky and Sofia Moorland. I don’t really know what to expect, but I guess we’ll see.

BRIANNA gets into her car.

SCENE THIRTY ONE – EXT. SAPPHIRE ENTERTAINMENT – B-ROLL

Some B-roll shots of the Sapphire Entertainment building are shown.

SCENE THIRTY TWO – INT. SAPPHIRE ENTERTAINMENT – SOFIA’S OFFICE

SOFIA is sitting at her desk.

SKYLAR and BRIANNA are sitting in two chairs that face her.

SOFIA: First day. How are you ladies feeling?

SKYLAR: Pretty good.

BRIANNA: Excited.

SOFIA: Good. Well thank you for taking the time to meet with me.

SKYLAR: It sounded important.

SOFIA: Oh it is. As you may know, Sapphire is looking for some ways to expand our teen and young adult audience.

BRIANNA: Of course.

SOFIA: And to do it, we are in the process of creating a brand new pop culture teen talk and entertainment show.

BRIANNA: Oh wow. That’s exciting. What’s the show called?

SOFIA: Sapphire Live.

SKYLAR: Makes sense. So do you have a host?

SOFIA: Well that depends, if my two candidates express interest.

BRIANNA: Do we get to know who or is that top secret until the show officially begins production?

SOFIA: Yes. And I’m looking at them.

SKYLAR and BRIANNA simultaneously turn to look at each other.

BRIANNA: I’m sorry…

SKYLAR: You’re considering us to be your hosts?

SOFIA: You sound surprised.

SKYLAR: Well yeah, a little bit. I mean, that’s a big deal.

SOFIA: Yes it is. However, I’m only in need of one host and if the show is as huge of a success as I’m anticipating, it would open quite a few doors for whoever is chosen.

SKYLAR and BRIANNA are pretty much rendered speechless.

SOFIA: Tell you what, for the next few weeks, I’ll be watching your work that you both come up with respectively for your content creation. Once the docuseries is near completion, I will extend my offer to whoever I deem fit for the job.

SCENE THIRTY THREE – SKYLAR’S CONFESSIONAL 3

SKYLAR: Well this is a game changer. This is such an amazing opportunity, but I don’t know. Something doesn’t feel right.

SCENE THIRTY FOUR – BRIANNA’S CONFESSIONAL 3

BRIANNA: I’ve wanted something like this for so long. But the last thing I want to do is risk jeopardizing my friendship with Sky. This could change everything.

The reality show style ends for this episode.

SCENE THIRTY FIVE – INT. THE LUXE – GYM – EVENING

LOLA and MAYA are walking on two treadmills side by side.

MAYA: So do you think it went well?

LOLA: As far as first days go, yes. They mostly focused on filming Sky and Bri today while the rest of us did promo shots, which I was thankful for, especially after that little director’s reveal this morning. God, I just can’t believe it. I finally get to a good place to do this project and then Sam’s ex gets involved.

MAYA: Relax. I’m sure he had nothing to do with it. Don’t let this derail you.

LOLA: I’m not. In fact, I’m gonna use this.

MAYA: Meaning what?

LOLA: That I’m not gonna have any problem playing the antagonist now.

MAYA: Maybe that’s what Sofia wanted.

LOLA: What do you mean?

MAYA: That it sounds like Sofia brought Sam’s ex in to work on this project just to get a reaction out of you. Do not put it past her. You know what she’s capable of.

LOLA: Well if that’s the case, two can play that game. If she wants a reaction, that’s what she’ll get.

SCENE THIRTY SIX – INT. THE LUXE – LOLA AND MAYA’S APARTMENT – EVENING

LOLA and MAYA walk through the front door.

MAYA is scrolling on her phone while MAYA puts her keys in the bowl on the table near the door.

LOLA: You wanna order something in?

MAYA: Yeah. Sounds good.

MAYA sits on the couch, still looking at her phone.

LOLA can tell something’s off with her.

LOLA: Everything okay?

MAYA: Yeah.

LOLA: I’m not convinced.

MAYA sighs.

LOLA: Look M, I know you’re stressed about all of the show drama, but I promise you, I’m fine. I’m not gonna let Sofia manipulate me like this.

MAYA: That’s not what this is about.

LOLA furrows her eyebrows and joins MAYA on the couch.

LOLA: Then what is it?

MAYA: Dad called me today.

LOLA: He did?

MAYA: Yeah.

LOLA: Well what did he want?

MAYA: Well, he wanted to talk to both of us, but you were on set and I didn’t want to bother you while you were working, so I told him that I would relay the message.

LOLA’s face urges her to continue.

MAYA: He said that he’s selling the house.

LOLA is surprised.

SCENE THIRTY SEVEN – INT. SAPPHIRE ENTERTAINMENT – LOBBY – EVENING

RAYA is walking with her bag on her shoulder.

SAM approaches her.

SAM: Hey.

RAYA: Hi.

SAM: So as much as I would love to pretend like this isn’t awkward—

RAYA: It is. Look, I didn’t take this job for any malicious reason and I certainly didn’t do it to make you uncomfortable. But it was an offer that I couldn’t refuse.

SAM: I get it.

RAYA: And I promise that I will keep things strictly professional.

SAM: Thank you. Can I walk you out?

RAYA: Uh, yeah. That would be great.

SAM and RAYA start to walk towards the exit.

RAYA: So about this show—

SAM: I know, right? I mean my friends would kill me if they knew I said it, but I think it’s a waste of my time. I’m not TV star material.

RAYA: Then what do you call that little channel you started over the summer?

SAM: An experiment. I mean the only reason it even succeeded was because of Lola and that’s—

RAYA: Complicated?

SAM: Very.

SCENE THIRTY EIGHT – EXT. SAPPHIRE ENTERTAINMENT – MAIN ENTRANCE

SAM and RAYA approach her car.

RAYA: This is me.

SAM: Right. Well I guess I’ll see you tomorrow.

RAYA: See you tomorrow.

RAYA gets into her car.

SAM waves as she pulls off.

SCENE THIRTY NINE – INT. LIV’S APARTMENT – BEDROOM

LIV is in her pajamas getting ready for bed. She hears a knock on the door.

SCENE FORTY – INT. LIV’S APARTMENT – FOYER

LIV walks up the door and looks out the peephole. She opens the door.

JAYLIN is at the door.

JAYLIN: Hi.

LIV: Um, hi.

There’s an awkward silence between the two before JAYLIN speaks up.

JAYLIN: I’m sure you’re probably wondering why I’m here.

LIV: I am. We’re not scheduled to film together until tomorrow.

JAYLIN: I know, but I wanted to tell you how great I thought you did today for the promo shoots.

LIV: Thanks. I do know how to pose for a camera, but you came all the way over here just to tell me that?

JAYLIN: Well, no. I want this show to be a success just as much as you and your friends do, so I think that if you and I are gonna play love interests to each other, we should spend some time together away from the cameras.

LIV: Jaylin, I’m flattered, but I am not interested in having a romantic relationship with you in real life.

JAYLIN: I understand, but if we really want the public to believe our performance for the cameras, it might benefit us to spend some time together off camera as friends.

LIV: I’d be down for that.

JAYLIN: Sweet. See you tomorrow.

LIV: Bye.

JAYLIN flashes a charming smile at Liv before he walks down the hall.

LIV closes the door.

SCENE FORTY ONE – INT. AUSTIN’S CAR

AUSTIN is sitting in the driver’s seat.

JAYLIN opens the door and gets into the passenger’s seat.

AUSTIN: Did she fall for it?

JAYLIN: Hook, line, and sinker.

AUSTIN: Excellent. It’s only a matter of time before Liv gives in.

JAYLIN: And what if she doesn’t? She seems to have her priorities straight as far as her love life is concerned.

AUSTIN: Not for long. This is just the beginning. Those L&Os will never see what’s coming.

AUSTIN smirks mischievously as he starts the car.

SCENE FORTY TWO – EXT. LOLA AND MAYA’S APARTMENT – BALCONY

MAYA is sitting in one of the chairs in her pajamas drinking some tea.

Her phone rings on the table. She takes a deep breath before she answers it.

MAYA: Hey dad.

MR. MONTGOMERY: Hey. So I take it that you told your sister the news?

MAYA: Yeah, I did.

MR. MONTGOMERY: So how did she take it?

MAYA: How do you think? This is Lola we’re talking about and that was nothing compared to the bomb we’re gonna have to drop on her on Saturday.

MR. MONTGOMERY: Look, I know that this has been hard for you and I’m sorry, but it’s for her own good. The last thing I wanted was to distract her from her work right now, but we’re running out of time and I wouldn’t want her to find out from anyone but us.

MAYA: I get it. God, she’s gonna hate me. I hate that I’ve been lying to her, dad.

MR. MONTGOMERY: She’s not going to hate you. If anything, she’ll be thrilled. This was what she’s wanted for years.

MAYA: I know, but that doesn’t make it easier.

MR. MONTGOMERY: Look, we’ll figure all of this out when you get here.

MAYA: Okay. See you Saturday.

MR. MONTGOMERY: Love you.

MAYA: Love you too.

MAYA hangs up the phone and sighs before she grabs her mug and heads inside. She closes the curtains in front of the balcony doors.
